Returning to Diablo 4 for a new season creates an awkward question: can you keep the hero you already leveled, especially after spending hours refining skills and collecting Diablo 4 gear? As of August 15, 2026, the answer for Season 14 is no. An Eternal Realm character cannot become Seasonal. You must create a separate Seasonal character, while your original hero remains available with its existing progress.
Realm Choice Is Fixed at Character Creation
Eternal and Seasonal heroes explore much of the same world, but they belong to separate progression environments. The realm choice made during character creation is part of that character's permanent state.
Reaching the level cap, completing the campaign, unlocking higher difficulty settings, or clearing endgame activities does not open a transfer option. Diablo 4 also offers no way to reset an Eternal hero to level one and place it in the current season.
The movement only works in the other direction. When a season ends, its characters move to the Eternal Realm. Their normal progress continues there, although season-specific features may no longer operate in the same form.
What Season 14 Requires
Season of Death Awakening began on June 30, 2026. Accessing its dedicated progression means creating a new hero and selecting Seasonal before entering the game. You can reuse the same class, appearance, name, and build idea, but the result is still a separate character.
◆ Select Seasonal during the final character creation options.
◆ Choose Normal or Hardcore based on your preferred risk level.
◆ Use an eligible campaign skip if you want to reach seasonal activities sooner.
◆ Enter the seasonal questline early to learn its unique progression systems.
This fresh hero can pursue Pandemonium Ruptures, Deathtoll Chambers, Glints of Hope, the seasonal lair boss, and Season Rank objectives. Those systems are structured around rebuilding power during the season rather than importing a finished Eternal setup.
What Progress Does Not Carry Across?
Your Eternal hero's level, equipped items, personal inventory, materials, currency, stash resources, and established build remain on Eternal. Story completion may streamline where another character begins, but convenience should not be confused with transferred character power.
That separation matters when planning your first hours. Do not build a leveling route around resources stored on Eternal, and do not remove your old hero just to recreate the same class. Treat Seasonal storage and progression as an independent pool.
Season 14's Season Rank structure can provide Skill Points and Paragon Points through its own objectives. Following those goals is generally more useful than trying to duplicate every step your Eternal character previously took.
Eternal or Seasonal: Which Fits Your Time?
Eternal is the sensible choice if you value uninterrupted build development, established resources, and freedom from recurring restarts. It is also useful for players who have limited weekly time and would rather improve one mature hero.
Seasonal suits players who want the current questline, temporary mechanics, fresh progression, reward objectives, and competitive rankings. The restart works best when used as an opportunity to test another class or take a familiar build in a different direction.
Your decision should come down to continuity versus access to Season 14's complete progression path. Keep playing Eternal if preserving your developed character matters most; create a new Seasonal hero if the fresh journey sounds worthwhile. If you later choose to buy cheap Diablo IV Items, make sure your plans match the realm you actually play, because Eternal resources cannot support your Seasonal start.
